I don’t know if anyone is watching this show. It should be famous in the US, but in Asia, I don’t know, maybe it depends on if you’ve got the right channel plan that will include the channel that is broadcasting the show.
I have watched two episodes for translating English subtitles. At first I really don’t like the show. I don’t like the way of their competition goes. There are four contestants in every episode, but in the end there is only one winner. After I watch these episodes, of course I feel happy for the winner, but I also feel really sad about other contestants. Under the pressure of time, some contestants can fail in the way that may be unexpected by themselves. I think those who fail at the last round will feel the worst. They are so close to the victory, but in the end they’re just…just close to it. So even if the cupcakes look delicious, and I feel happy for the winner who survives the third round, overall I don’t have positive feeling about the competition. I am more impressed with the faces of those who did not win, and I keep wondering how they feel about their failure, when it is so public that many people can see, even including people in Asia.
However, perhaps these unlucky contestants still win something? After all, they come to the show and they can introduce themselves and their shop in public. I think the competition is really hard. The contestants need to bake under the pressure, and that kind of pressure may not be the same as they usually have in the shop. Some contestants may join the show more than once, and sometimes they may win. And that can be a good story to tell their children or grandchildren.
Another thing I don’t like about the show is that there is no communication between contestants. It looks like everyone only cares about his/her own victory and others are just the ones who get in their way. At least, the show makes you feel like this. No one will give compliments to the other contestants, but when I watch some other cook competitions, sometimes you will see contestants giving praises to their rivals, or they build friendship with other contestants. Is it true or is it just for the show? No one can tell, at least not from the side of audience. But for me, I think it is reasonable the contestants may build some friendship, and sometimes, other people can do better than you. That’s for sure. But the only important thing is do not let the failure stops you. I hope those who do not win still have their shop open and I hope their business goes well too. Cupcakes are edible artifacts, and I think maybe all the people are just learning to do better next time.
Here are some cupcake shops in Taiwan. I still don’t know what their cupcake taste like. Hope they taste as good as they look!
