What Does Toeic Test Mean to You?

In Taiwan, lots of people learn English for passing a test, and they would see this as an investment.  They hope the test can bring them some possible outcome, like being accepted by a top school, getting a good job, or getting a pay raise.   Maybe there are some people with these good things in their lives, but probably no one can be so sure it is really their test score that makes a difference.   In my previous career life, language test score actually brings me more embarrassment or even humiliation whenever I don’t know something that is actually more a professional knowledge than a general understanding of the language.  People will really say something like that to my face.   I am impressed that most of the time politics can go over language, what is grammatically correct can be inappropriate or unacceptable in some office, just because those who are in higher place don’t know the correct usage of English but just know “what they usually write."  Even in the field where more people have more knowledge about English, power struggle is there within any institution or system.  Anarchy can never be realized, even in the world of language.

So for me, most language tests are “not much of use." My life does not change because of it, even though I may own some certificate or grades that other people are longing to have.  They may spend lots of money and time going to cram school and studying day and night for it.   I can’t say language tests are totally useless, because they may be helpful under some circumstances.  I just want to say that there is also the case when language tests have no serious impact on one’s career.  And I happen to experience this all the time.   Some people may get low grades when they take Toeic test and feel frustrated about their performance, but life is fair, there are the case like me when language test can’t make too much difference.  I hope those people can be relieved and forget about their failure.  Test is not everything.  You still have friends and families that support you.  You still have lots of nice qualities to be proud of.  The test scores cannot take away good things from you.  Only you can choose how your life is gonna be and shape your future.  Do not let any language test intimidate you and remember, you are the master of your own life.
