Are You Washed in the Blood? (Translation)

Are You Washed in the Blood? Are You Washed in the Blood?

First Reformed

David Bowie, “Lazarus” (Translation)

David Bowie, “Sue” (Or in a Season of Crime)

Another impressive song from David Bowie in recent years is “Sue." There is two different arrangements of this single. Here in  the video clip is the radio edit version of the first arrangement made by Maria Schneider.  She has a jazz band called Maria Schneider Orchestra. She is a composer, a conductor. A woman conductor is still very rare these days I guess?  (For anyone interested in her band’s performance  you can watch this clip.)

I was very surprised and really intrigued when I first heard this song from HBO’s Bowie Documentary.  This modern, jazzy version of the arrangement refreshes my impression of the rock star.  I still remember he sang “Nature Boy" for the movie “Moulin Rouge" years ago.  That cover version is really like a song from some musicals.  So again, in his last years, he is still an inspiration to the world.

David Bowie, “Lazarus”

I saw a little bit of HBO’s documentary “David Bowie: The Last Five Years" last week. After listening to some musicians talking about how they worked with David on his last album “Blackstar," I’ve become very interested in it. Later I borrowed a copy from our local library and listened to it with amazement and delight.  It’s been quite a while since the last time I listened to an entire album so attentively.  God knows how rare this is in the modern time.
The single “Lazarus" is my favourite, and it catches my imagination right from the beginning. Perhaps that’s because he was really in his last days when he was filming the video. The documentary mentioned David’s idea about the music video and how the director tried to execute the idea, and then, the result is here.  Watching the video two years from his death now really makes me wonder how he felt, what he was actually thinking when he was lying  in that bed, playing that character “Button Eye." Now we will never know. He has gone back to the Blackstar. But surely his music will remain on Earth, being the proof of his stay.
